About the Festival

Unfold Dance Festival is a five-day, curated summer dance experience in Atlanta, GA. Through morning movement classes in contemporary dance, floorwork, and partnering, paired with guest artist classes and afternoon creative rehearsals, dancers will engage a wide range of approaches, techniques, and pedagogies from Atlanta’s vibrant creative community.

In addition to daily technique training, participants will collaborate in the creative process of a new, original work by Catching Mangoes Dance or Medina Movement Collective, culminating the festival with a free public performance.

FAQs

Who can participate in Unfold?

1

This summer festival is flexible to dance artists at various stages of their artistic practice and career, including pre-professional and early professional dancers, who want to work with Atlanta-based artists and companies actively making and presenting work.

Where will the festival be held?

2

Unfold Dance Fest will take place at Emory’s Schwartz Center for Performing Arts.

1700 N Decatur Rd, Atlanta, GA 30326

3

Why do I need to apply?

We ask for a brief application to learn more about and prepare for who will be joining us in this summer experience. Casting for either Catching Mangoes Dance or Medina Movement Collective will be determined in part by your application materials.

What is included in the tuition?

4

  • Exploring 10 hours of a creative process with either Catching Mangoes Dance or Medina Movement Collective

  • Opportunity to perform in an in-studio showing

  • 9 classes split between technique and rep, learning from Julio Medina, Jacque Pritz, and select guest artists

  • Networking and community building activities built in throughout the day!

How should I prepare for the festival?

5

If you’re coming from out of town, we recommend securing lodging and transportation as soon as you decide you’re participating in Unfold. The festival does not provide room and board.

The closest parking deck is Fishburne Parking Deck, right next door to Schwartz. The max daily parking is $14/day. Parking is not provided with tuition.

You will also need to provide your own lunch. Emory Village (10 min walk from Schwartz) has a selection of restaurants to explore!

Bring whatever else you need to take care of your body: plenty of water, change of clothes, light snacks, foam rollers, knee pads, etc.

How is casting determined?

6

Casting will be determined by dancers’ festival application materials and a short audition on the first day of the festival. All dancers participating in the full festival will be cast in one work. Official cast lists will be sent out via e-mail before Day 2.

Dancers who do not want to perform in the in-studio showing have the option to be an understudy or alternate for the work they are casted in to allow for continuous engagement in the creative process. We ask all dancers attending the full festival to participate in the audition regardless of performance interest. Please reach out to the team if you have further questions about casting.

Who do I contact with further questions?

7

Please e-mail additional questions to the team at unfold.dancefest@gmail.com. Official communications about the festival will be sent from this e-mail address so we suggest you add us to your contacts!
